Project Success Stories

In late 2006 Pact was awarded a cooperative agreement from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Malawi with funding through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to implement a major HIV/AIDS grants management program in Malawi.

This Rapid Response Mechanism for HIV/AIDS in Malawi is part of Pact's global Community REACH program, which offers competitive grant awards to local NGOs, CBOs, and FBOs to support best practices and innovative approaches to community-based HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support activities. Subsequently Pact opened a new office in Lilongwe, Malawi, in January 2007.

Pact Malawi fosters capacity building with partners, with a particular emphasis on organizational development, in order to support quality service delivery and promote sustainability beyond the life of our programming. Our distinctive approach combines efficient distribution of funds with comprehensive technical assistance and organizational development for civil society organizations that support a coordinated response to HIV and AIDS, which is led by the Government of Malawi under the Extended National Action Framework.

As a member of the Government of Malawi’s HIV and AIDS Technical Working Groups convened by the Ministries of Health; Gender, Child and Community Development; and Youth Development and Sports, Pact Malawi offers technical support on key HIV and AIDS issues. We also collaborate with the Government of Malawi to support an independent secretariat for the Malawi Global Fund Coordinating Committee.

Pact Malawi Programs
We offer financial and technical support to Malawian civil society partners that implement HIV and AIDS prevention, care, and support projects focusing on:
·         Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV,
·         Prevention through abstinence, being faithful, condom use, and medical injection safety,
·         Palliative and home based care,
·         Care for orphans and vulnerable children,
·         HIV testing and counseling, and
·         Policy and systems strengthening.

Partner organizations receive mentoring in financial management and compliance, service delivery, data quality management, and monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and learning (MERL). Through Pact’s organizational development methodology, partners participate in a hands-on, client-driven process to identify areas requiring institutional strengthening, and then design and implement capacity building plans to address their unique needs.

As of early 2010, Pact Malawi is implementing three HIV and AIDS programs- Community REACH, EBT Prev, andBRIDGE II - which provide services to tens of thousands of beneficiaries across the country.
