Background:
The Common Fund for Commodities, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union (AU) and the Communities of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners (CASM) held a workshop in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, in November 2008 bringing together stakeholders in the African region.

The objectives of the Workshop were:
  • To examine and prioritise the needs of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Africa;
  • To identify support measures that are of priority interest for specific countries and to develop pilot projects for CFC support; and
  • To raise awareness of the needs of the ASM sector in Africa to the international community and its linkages to development strategies; particularly to poverty reduction and sustainable development.
