Outreach Guide - HIV Prevention Programs

A series of 10 Outreach Guides have been developed by Pact Botswana to assist HIV/AIDS program implementors working in HIV prevention interventions.  The Guides utilize participatory methodologies, and underline approaches that promote behavior change, targeting most-at-risk groups, and taking co-factors into consideration, such as alcohol abuse, sexual violence, and intergenerational sex.

The ten guides are as follows:

• OUTREACH GUIDE 1 (PDF 2,437 KB) - Organizing and Conducting Outreach
 An introduction to the Outreach Guide series and the accompanying Picture  Codes is covered in this guide. It makes suggestions on how to organize  Outreach and how to conduct it, including how to make it attractive and  encourage participation.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 2 (PDF 3,682 KB) - Abstinence Promotion
 Developed for use with young people who have not yet had their first sexual  experience, with the goal of encouraging them to delay that first sexual  encounter. It also helps prepare them for dealing with pressures to have sex.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 3 (PDF 1,436 KB) - Assertiveness and Peer Pressure
Covers building up self-confidence and learning how to be firm and strong without being overly aggressive. An understanding of the influence of  peer pressure to have sex is included.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 4 (PDF 2,678 KB) - Values and Goal Setting
Deals with looking at the future and what can be achieved in life by setting goals, as well as deciding and living by moral values dealt with. The idea is that people make better behaviour choices today if they set their own standards and future goals. Choosing moral values and living by them is also covered.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 5 (PDF 4,388 KB) - Sexual Behaviour Choices
Since HIV is very likely going to be transmitted sexually, working on making good decisions about sexual behaviour is essential to avoiding becoming infected. Different kinds of sexual behaviour that put people at risk are examined.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 6 (PDF 5,521 KB) - Alcohol Abuse Reduction
Alcohol abuse contributes to HIV infection by increasing desire to have sex and affecting judgment. Deals with understanding the link between alcohol abuse and sexual risk, as well as different ways to control alcohol abuse.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 7 (PDF 3,273 KB) - Gender Roles and Sexual Abuse Reduction
Inequality of the sexes contributes to HIV infection. When women have less power and resources than men, they become vulnerable to being abused and are forced to have sex.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 8 (PDF 5,056 KB) - Better Couple Communication
When couples, whether married or not, are not listening to and understanding each other, they can end up disrespecting and not trusting each other. Improving couple communication and avoiding infidelity is the focus of this guide.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 9 (PDF 1,033 KB) - Enhancing Parent-child Communication
Parents often have difficultly guiding their teenagers towards making good decisions about avoiding HIV. Building parents’ communication skills and ability to communicate with teenagers without distancing them is the focus of this guide.

• OUTREACH GUIDE 10 (PDF 3,384 KB) - Partner Reduction and Protection
This guide is for conducing Outreach with those who practice sexual risk behaviour.  It recommends reducing the number of partners they have sex with. It also includes content on how to promote condom use including how to overcome obstacles to use.
