Corporate Community Engagement Publications Artisanal & Small-scale Mining and Livelihoods in Africa — The Common Fund for Commodities, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union (AU) and the Communities of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners (CASM) held a workshop bringing together stakeholders in the African region. The objectives of the workshop were to examine and prioritize the needs of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Africa; to identify support measures that are of priority interest for specific countries and to develop pilot projects for CFC support; and to raise awareness of the needs of the ASM sector in Africa to the international community and its linkages to development strategies, particularly to poverty reduction and sustainable development. This document is the final report resulting from this effort. Natural Resources and Trade Flows in the Great Lakes Region — Through the Natural Resource and Trade Flows Project in the Great Lakes Region (DRC, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda) Pact and its partners aimed to provide an in-depth, objective and comprehensive analysis of minerals and other natural resource trade flows in the Great Lakes Region. Research identified trends, opportunities and experiences that have been successful in creating an environment where trade can flourish and corruption can be decreased. An additional synthesis report of all partners is available. Kolwezi Economic Development and Governance Transition Strategy — In response to tensions and conflicts over resource access and trade, the former Vice-Governor of Katanga, His Excellency Chikez Diemu, requested assistance. Pact, with private mining company support, solicited support for a multi-donor approach to address the conflict in Kolwezi resulting from the tension between the artisanal and large-scale mining sectors and to present a plan for a peaceful economic development. Following eight months of research and stakeholder engagement, a strategy has been developed for a peaceful transition to broad-based economic development and improved governance in Kolwezi and the surrounding area. Contributing Toward a Post Conflict Transition in the DRC: Addressing the Security of Artisinal Mining Women in Katanga and Oriental Provinces — The transition period from ASM to large industrial mining is wrought with potential conflicts and severe challenges as livelihood opportunities will be lost and access to resources will be restricted. While most advocacy and lobby groups focus on issues of revenue transparency, and the implementation standards practiced by industrial companies, the deplorable conditions and discrimination facing artisanal miners remains largely overlooked, including women and young girls. This report outlines emerging lessons from the work of Pact and its partners in addressing gender issues in ASM can improve global practice. |
