Expanding and Supporting the Media Sector in Ethiopia

Name:  Expanding and Supporting the Media Sector in Ethiopia
Duration:  February 2009 - January 2010
Donors:  National Democratic Institute (NDI)

In the Expanding and Supporting the Media Sector in Ethiopia, Pact will conduct two new project components, which will be managed under the existing USAID funded Constructive Dialogue Initiative. The project components are: 1) to develop and support the an Media Forum and the promotion of Self Regulation, and 2) to develop Community Radio programming at the regional and local level. The overall goal of these two project components are to strengthen the media sector and significantly increase the ability of the media to reach out and communicate effectively within Ethiopia.

The objectives for the components are:

  • Develop a sustainable Media Forum that will contribute to building a professional media and work toward creating space for independent media
  • Contribute to efforts to create a press council and code of conduct in order to promote self-regulation of the media sector
  • Develop sustainable and replicable models of community broadcasting that will contribute to expanding the availability of accurate information in a forum that allows diverse populations to share information and generate discussions
  • Develop radio programming that contributes to the social and economic development of communities across Ethiopia.
