Copper, Cobalt and Conflict

The project aims to create the capacity, mechanisms, and relationships for reducing conflict in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector of Kolwezi through the following four objectives:

  • Promote reconciliation, cooperation, and understanding along ASM-related institutional actors;
  • Prevent conflicts and risks to communities over resource access and use;
  • Improve access to, and awareness of, pertinent mine legislation; and
  • Establish a conflict resolution mechanism for disputes and conflicts.

Resources

  • Kolwezi artisanal miners survey. A two-page summary of the findings of a survey carried out in August 2009 of artisanal miners in the Kolwezi region. The survey looked to answer the question, how did the global economic downturn and commodities bust impact the livelihoods of artisanal miners. [PDF, 2 pages] 
  • Kolwezi Economic Development and Governance Transition Plan- This report outlines critical elements to the development of Kolwezi and the reduction of conflict between artisanal and large-scale mining. The report was produced as the result of a project funded by the International Finance Corporation, USAID, and a number of international mining companies.
