In October 2008 Pact received additional funds for the EIN to focus solely on the management of conflict and artisanal mining in Ituri district, of Oriental province in the northeast of the country. 
These funds aim to:
  • deepen stakeholder understanding of the drivers towards artisanal mining, particularly by demobilised soldiers in the District
  • contribute towards the broad stability plans led by the UN and other international NGOs
  • create tangible peace dividends for the most vulnerable mining communities
  • assist artisanal miners emerge from indebted relationships and deplorable working conditions through literacy, savings, and technical training.
These activities are implemented primarily on Mining Concession 40 with Ashanti Goldfields Kilo, a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti. Other activities include WORTH, a women's literacy and empowerment program, and capacity building of local civil society, with a particular focus on developing the capacity of the Mongbwalu stakeholder forum to represent the concerns of the community with company.
