Food Security in KatangaName: Food Security in Katanga Due to recent deterioration of the quality and quantity of the production of cassava caused by the disease known as Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) and other pests, the International Institute of Tropic Agriculture (IITA), in partnership with Pact, is engaged in efforts to increase multiplication and diffusion of improved varieties of cassava in the region. With improved varieties traditional cassava producers will be able to generate more income from their crops and provide greater food security for their families and communities. Activities include developing multiplication sites in five strategic "territories" in Katanga province. At each site different cassava varieties are grown and evaluated against selected criteria. The sites also serve as farmer field schools to introduce producers to the new varieties. Facilitators at the schools are trained in management practices, integrated pest management, conservation and transformation. PartnersUnited States Agency for International Development Staff contacts
