Where We Work

Women Becoming Labor Justice Leaders

In Guatemala, Pact subgrantee CEADEL (Center for Studies and Support of Local Development) designed a labor rights training program for women leaders from the garment manufacturing industry. The program aimed to develop the women’s knowledge and leadership skills, and to prepare them to disseminate information about labor justice. Several participants of this training program were subsequently invited by government ministries and civil society organizations to participate in roundtable discussions and workshops throughout the country.

Two of these women leaders, Ingrid Marleny Carranza and Mayra Adriana Aguilar Diaz, attended the International Conference on Labor Rights held in Marrakesh, Morocco from February 9th to 18th, 2011.

During the Marrakesh event, the discussions focused on working conditions, organizational support programs for women workers and organizing methods. The possibility of holding the event next year in Guatemala was discussed. By assuming an important role not only in their communities but in the international labor movement, these women are fellow coworkers and working women around the world.
