Post HIV Testing Clubs offer new life strategies

Take the test and Move On with your life

A part of Pact's mission in Zimbabwe is to prevent the spread and mitigate the consequences of HIV/AIDS by building capacity, forming networks and building coalitions among the public, private and NGO sectors to combat the pandemic. A new and exciting part of Pact's vision in Zimbabwe is the creation and expansion of post-HIV test support services.

Pact is partnering with three local NGOs to create five branches of post test clubs called ?Moving On?? to provide the support, encouragement, advice and referral services to anyone who has taken an HIV test, regardless of test outcome. Members of Moving On clubs can participate in guided program activities as well as receive a wide variety of services, including information and referral services. A cadre of local doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, nutritionists, ministers, herbalists, physical therapists and counselors are available for private sessions or group presentations. In addition, the clubs offer access to affordable condoms, a regular newsletter, peer counseling services, and, in two of the clubs, Internet access and training.

Equally important, the Moving On clubs offer a place for members to get emotional support in a confidential and caring atmosphere. In the safety of the clubs members can give voice to their fears and concerns, regardless of test status. For those who have tested positive, the clubs offer a way for members to move forward with clear plans to improve the quality of their lives. For those who have tested negative, the clubs give members a chance to plan safe future relationships and maintain their negative status. As positive and negative test status member s become involved with each other, the stigma associated with HIV begins to break down with many joining the fight against the spread of AIDs.

Since the Moving On clubs were started in Harare City Center, Chitungwiza, Norton, Epworth and Bulawayo in October 2001, more than 1900 people have become members and availed themselves of services.

The Moving On clubs work in close collaboration with the New Start Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centers around Zimbabwe.
