Advocacy, Awareness and Civic Empowerment (ADVANCE)

Advocacy, Awareness and Civic Empowerment (ADVANCE)

Name: Advocacy, Awareness and Civic Empowerment (ADVANCE)
Duration: May 2005 - May 2010
Donors: United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

The year 2007 marks the first time Nigeria has transitioned from one democratically elected government to another. Yet Nigeria's democratic institutions remain weak and vulnerable to destabilizing forces. Most notably, chronic corruption and continued lack of transparency and accountability at all levels of government persist as principal obstacles to increased economic investment, social cohesion and broad-based positive transformation of the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The ADVANCE project seeks to enhance civil society capacity to engage effectively and constructively with government. To achieve this, Pact is assisting to deepen institutional capacity among national civil society advocacy coalitions, improve their overall effectiveness as advocacy bodies, and strengthen government and civil society partnerships in concerted and coordinated efforts to fight corruption.

The partnership with Action Aid Nigeria enables Pact to create a strong programmatic approach, based on our own strength in organizational and advocacy assessment to improve capacity and Action Aid's long proven track record in providing technical assistance in such areas as budget tracking, budget advocacy, and sectoral budgeting.
