Deforestation is the largest contributor to global emissions of greenhouse gas in the developing world. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a framework that aims to measure and attach value to the carbon stored in forests. REDD serves as an economic incentive, rewarding communities that manage and sustain forest resources in the fight against climate change. The REDD+ framework was introduced based on conversations at COP-14 in Bali, to go beyond deforestation and degradation to include conservation, sustainable forest management, and the enhancement of carbon stocks.

Pact’s approach to REDD fits within the REDD+ mechanism and focuses on a community forestry approach. We believe communities must play a central role in preventing deforestation and degradation and sequestering carbon in forest ecosystems. We work closely with forest-dependent communities to secure land tenure and land use rights, and design and negotiate REDD+ agreements with governments and the private sector. Pact’s approach puts people and communities at the heart of forest management, ultimately leading to international goals of mitigating climate change, deforestation, and habitat destruction.
