Restoration of Community Stability in Gambella

Restoration of Community Stability in Gambella

Name: Restoration of Community Stability in Gambella
Duration: September 2004 - September 2009
Donors: USAID/Ethiopia

This project supports the restoration of community stability in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. Gambella has long been divided by violent ethnic conflicts which have resulted in the loss of many lives. The Restoration of Community Stability project mobilizes the community, encourages communities to work towards establishing peace through peace actors, and enhances the capacities of the peace actors to reduce the incidence of violent conflict. The project promotes opportunities for dialogue and establishes appropriate and agreed channels of dialogue with the Sudanese and the Ethiopian authorities and has also introduced best practices from other Pact projects that support conflict reduction and peace-building in other areas of Ethiopia and in Sudan. Pact reaches out to the people of Gambella through in-depth participatory conflict analysis and by engaging government and non-governmental officials at workshops to discuss conflict among ethnic groups in the Gambella region. The project seeks to ultimately strengthen the emergence of an active civil society, build the capacity of civil administration, and support inter & intra ethnic initiatives aimed at strengthening of relations.
