Where We Work

Promoting HIV/AIDS Leadership through Women CBOs in six constituencies of Zambia supported by the SHARe Program (SHARe II)

Name: Promoting HIV/AIDS Leadership through Women CBOs in six constituencies of Zambia supported by the SHARe Program (SHARe II)
Duration: December 11, 2008 to March 31, 2010
Donor: USAID

In an agreement through December 10, 2008, Pact provided support to John Snow, Inc as it implemented the Support to the HIV/AIDS Response in Zambia (SHARe) project, which served as a catalyst to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS and improve the quality of life for persons affected by HIV and AIDS in Zambia. Pact Zambia worked with five Community Based Organizations (CBOs) supporting gender and HIV/AIDS prevention programs in six selected constituencies with the local Constituency Liaison Committee on HIV and AIDS (CLC) to implement gender sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention activities.

In this new SHARe II program, Pact Zambia’s goal is to support women’s organizations working with CLCs (Constituency Liaison Committee on HIV/AIDS) to implement gender sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention programs with emphasis on A & B messaging including the Real Man, Real Woman campaign and other HIV/AIDS prevention in the six selected constituencies of Mansa central, Bangweulu, Bahati, Petauke central, Luangeni and Mumbwa Central. The second phase of the project will have a greater focus on building the capacity of the CBOs and CLCs as a way of contributing to the sustainability of their activities. During the one year of implementation it is expected that the project will reach out to 60,000 people with HIV/AIDS prevention messages in the six constituencies. This translates into 10,000 people to be reached in each constituency.

The objectives of the program are fivefold:

  • To build institutional and organizational capacities of CBOs and CLCs for improved service delivery and sustainability
  • To promote gender sensitivity in the Zambian HIV/AIDS response through women’s organizations and CLC
  • To strengthen and promote policy analysis and advocacy activities in the selected constituencies and contribute to the sustainability of CLCs to continue advocacy for policy change that embraces gender perspectives
  • To support a learning agenda for best practices in community HIV and AIDS implementation and gender sensitive advocacy
  • To contribute to A & B (Abstinence and Being Faithful) messaging and programming for Real Man Real Woman Campaign using National AIDS Council NAC gender-focused HIV and AIDS IEC materials and national HIV and AIDS policies and strategies.
