South Sudan Peace Fund

The South Sudan Peace Fund (SSPF) People to People peace building project aims to build unity of communities across the South in pursuit of national healing and reconciliation. The funding is for the 10 states of the South and is supported with funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UK Department of International Development and the Danish Embassy.

Three main projects form the overall South Sudan Peace Fund program which provides technical support on number activities aimed at strengthening the capacity of the South Sudan Peace Commissions. This includes support to grassroots rapid response to key threats and risks to community security; peace-building; conflict mitigation and transformation; civic voter education activities; efforts to establish a Conflict Early Warning System (CEWS); demobilization, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) and finally support to community security and small arms control (CSSAC) through collaboration with Safer World. In addition, Pact supports local organizations to facilitate tolerance and understanding among conflicting communities in Southern Sudan though innovative peace building activities through a Community Based Organization Excellence Initiative.

Pact’s activities in the South Sudan Peace Fund project include:

  • Promoting increased understanding and awareness of the root causes and triggers of conflict in Southern Sudan through the implementation of 2 conflict assessments;
  • Developing the capacity of the SSPC to respond to early warning of conflict in a timely and effective manner through supporting the development of a Conflict Early Warning System (CEWS);
  • Building the capacity of SSPC and South Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) to ensure conflict-sensitivity of key legislation through the provision of a Technical Advisor;
  • Coordinating among key government ministries in support of peace building through meetings, information sharing and networking;
  • Increasing the capacity of communities (including local administration and civil society) to respond to threats to community stability through the provision of funding pools for peacebuilding, rapid response and sustainable recovery and reintegration;
  • Improve government capacity to address community security and small arms control in Southern Sudan.
