After years of war and instability many sections of the border between the Greater Upper Nile region of Southern Sudan and the Gambella region in Ethiopia are prone to insecurity, dominated by armed groups, unresolved intercommunal disputes, multiple waves of displacement, and competition for land, water, services and citizenship. With establishment of a government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), potential exists for effective intergovernmental cooperation on border issues. This project aims to directly target priority conflict fault-lines among communities in the border area through support for local markets and increased and balanced interethnic trade. Begun in September 2005 this program is working with communities across the border to strengthen traders associations, promote entrepreneurs among women and youth groups, and support inter-governmental collaboration for improved border governance, stability and economic development.
