The Role

Pact, Inc., an international, not-for-profit development organization, has an immediate opening for a director of communications.

The director of communications is responsible for designing a communications plan that will increase Pact’s visibility and promote its mission of strengthening civil society and building the capacity of individuals, organizations, and networks worldwide. Pact is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has 25 field offices, implementing over 130 projects in Africa, Asia and Eurasia, and Latin America. Pact works to build empowered communities, effective governments, and responsible private businesses to reduce poverty and increase social justice.

The director will work with the board of directors, the executive staff, field leaders to develop an institutional communications plan which will establish annual communications goals and objectives, and a process for monitoring  the plan throughout the Pact network.  The director of communications manages both external and internal communications, which includes: institutional visibility and brand management, advocacy and thought leadership, and marketing support. Implementing Pact’s communications strategy will entail extensive networking with a wide range of development stakeholders, as well as utilization of consultants, vendors and interns. 

The Candidate

The candidate will be a high-energy, adaptive, and creative communications professional with a track record of achievement in designing and implementing communications activities in complex organizations. He/she will be deeply committed to increasing the effective use of a wide range of communications methods and technologies to strengthen   Pact’s reach and impact globally.  He/she will bring to this position a deep familiarity with the Web 2.0 environment, a working knowledge of critical development issues and actors, and the ability to engage with a wide variety of audiences and decision makers to leverage the impact of Pact’s work.  He/she will be systematic and methodical in phasing in both short term and long term communication activities.

Qualifications and Desired Skill Set

The qualifications for this position are a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible management experience in communications, media, marketing, advocacy, or a related field; experience with on-line communications and new media technologies; educational credentials and training relevant to communications with a graduate degree preferred; engagement in and understanding of  global development issues. Necessary skills for this position are: creative thinking with an entrepreneurial spirit;  respect and sensitivity toward diverse cultures; ability to be diplomatic; capacity to be an articulate public spokesperson; skill in coaching staff; excellent writing skills; strong team leadership and collaboration skills; foreign language skills desirable.
