Since its inception over one hundred years ago, The Salvation Army (TSA) has been committed to working with the poor throughout the world by tending to the whole person - an individual's emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. TSA currently serves communities in 108 nations with a vast network of officers (pastors), staff, and volunteers. TSA began its work in Kenya in 1921. Kenya boasts the largest Salvation Army in the world, with an extensive array of development and social work. The Salvation Army World Service Organization (SAWSO) and the TSA UK Territory are also partners in the Kenya project. Uganda and TanzaniaThe Salvation Army World Service Organization (SAWSO) has been vitally involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS since 1993. To this end, SAWSO has supported HIV/AIDS-related programming in 25 countries worldwide and has conducted regional and country-level workshops on HIV/AIDS care and prevention issues, including micro-finance, and micro-enterprise in the context of HIV/AIDS. USAID awarded SAWSO a Child Survival Program (2002-2007) for South Africa, 40% of which is focused on STI/HIV/AIDS and OVC work. SAWSO also won a REACH grant to support AIDS work in Malawi. In 2004 SAWSO, in partnership with AIDS Healthcare Foundation, opened an anti-retroviral treatment clinic at The Salvation Army's Mountain View Hospital in South Africa.
