Global ASM Database Launch

Global ASM Database Launch

Did you know that 90% of the global mining workforce is made up of women, children and men working in the artisanal and small scale mining (ASM) sector? Or that 12% of the world's official gold production comes from artisanal and small scale miners? These few statistics speak to the role this low technology, labor-intensive sector plays in the lives of millions of people around the globe. But data is sparse, making the true impact of ASM labor on global development relatively unknown.

We believe that with better data, the true story of the sector's social, environmental and economic impact can be told. We intend to create a global ASM database for that purpose. This effort requires collaboration from a range of stakeholders like you.

Join World Bank and Pact on Tuesday, January 24 as we launch a global call for data-sharing on the sector.
