Advancing Community Empowerment: Emergency flood response in Myanmar

August 14, 2018

Severe floods gripped southeastern Myanmar in July and August. Heavy rainfall resulted in the overflow of major rivers and dams and flooding in Kayin and Mon states and Bago and Tanintharyi regions. With 12 people killed and more than 150,000 displaced from their homes, more than 350 temporary shelter camps have been set up. The Advancing Community Empowerment project, or ACE, is providing assistance as part of its USAID-supported efforts. ACE consortium members quickly mobilized to help affected communities in Kayin state. Based on a needs assessment by Department of Disaster Management and ACE’s local partners, the consortium delivered life jackets, baby wraps and water.
