Pact is playing a key role in improving Sierra Leone’s burgeoning artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector, which provides critical livelihoods but is largely informal and associated with a range of social and environmental challenges, including mercury use. Pact is helping to kick-start implementation of the government's National Action Plan to reduce mercury usage in the gold mining sector through formalization, better mining practices and increased gender equality in mining communities.

As a partner in USAID's MOMENTUM project, Pact is also working to improve maternal, newborn and child health, family planning and reproductive health in Sierra Leone. Pact is strengthening the capacity of local agencies and organizations to provide critical health services.

Pact's past work in Sierra Leone has included efforts to stem environmental degredation, with a focus on improving people's livelihoods. We built partnerships at the community, regional and national levels to strengthen policies and systems for better natural resource management, and strengthened the capacity of local organizations working to protect ecosystems.
